Trump Administration Cancels $679 Million in Offshore Wind Funding

1 Sep 2025
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced on Friday that it is canceling $679 million in federal funding for 12 offshore wind projects across 11 states. The largest portion, $435 million, was allocated for a floating wind farm in Northern California, while a project in Maryland lost $47 million in funding.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, "Thanks to President Trump, we are prioritizing real infrastructure improvements over fantasy wind projects that cost much and offer little."

The funding cancellations are part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to limit support for renewable energy while emphasizing fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized wind power, calling it "ugly and expensive" and saying "smart countries don't use" it.

Separately, the Energy Department withdrew a $716 million loan guarantee for transmission upgrades in New Jersey, impacting offshore wind projects there. Construction of the nearly completed Revolution Wind project off Rhode Island and Connecticut has also been halted, with the Interior Department citing national security concerns.

Democratic lawmakers, governors, and labor unions criticized the moves, warning that they could jeopardize jobs, slow progress toward climate goals, and raise electricity costs. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called the decision "an attack on our jobs. It's an attack on our energy. It's an attack on our families and their ability to pay the bills."

Offshore wind developer Orsted, behind Revolution Wind, is evaluating the financial impact and may pursue legal action.
