UAE Leads $2.16B Clean Energy Expansion

19 Sep 2024
The UAE is cementing its position as a global leader in clean energy, driven by a diverse strategy that includes solar, wind, green hydrogen, and carbon capture technologies, according to Ryan McPherson, Regional Director for Middle East and Africa at the Energy Industries Council (EIC).

In an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), McPherson commended the UAE's progress, noting the launch of seven new renewable energy projects valued at $2.16 billion between the second half of 2023 and the first half of 2024. These projects span a variety of technologies, including energy from waste and geothermal energy.

McPherson highlighted the rapid growth in solar power capacity, with 13 solar projects expected to be operational by the end of the year, contributing 10.6GW to the national grid by 2024. He emphasized that the UAE's abundant solar resources will attract further investments, supporting the country's ambitious clean energy goals.

The UAE's vision extends beyond solar energy, with an ambitious goal of producing 1.4 million tons of hydrogen annually by 2031, positioning the country as a leader in green and blue hydrogen production. McPherson emphasized that large-scale projects and cutting-edge technologies will drive the UAE's hydrogen industry forward, solidifying its role as a global hydrogen powerhouse.

He also underscored the significance of the UAE's Energy Strategy 2050, which includes a $54 billion (AED200 billion) investment through 2030. This investment signals the UAE's unwavering commitment to a sustainable future and outlines a clear path for increasing renewable energy reliance and advancing hydrogen technologies.
