UK Approves 1.5GW Morgan Offshore Wind Farm in Irish Sea

4 Sep 2025
The U.K. has granted development consent for the 1.5-gigawatt Morgan offshore wind farm, being developed jointly by JERA Nex bp and Germany's EnBW in the Irish Sea. The project is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.5 million homes when its 96 turbines are operational.

The Morgan Wind Farm is the second project from the U.K.'s Round 4 offshore leasing round to receive approval and is among the fastest to progress from lease award to development consent. The Morgan Transmission Project, which will provide the infrastructure to transfer power from offshore turbines to the U.K. grid, is currently under examination, with a decision anticipated in 2026.

Sarah Pirie, Program Director at EnBW, said securing the Development Consent Order is "a critical step toward delivering this transformative project" and provides certainty for stakeholders and supply chains. Mark Hudson, Program Director at JERA Nex bp, added that the approval builds on the success of the Mona Offshore Wind Farm, advancing the U.K.'s transition to cleaner, low-carbon energy.

In addition to Morgan, JERA Nex bp and EnBW are also progressing two other offshore wind developments in the U.K.: the Mona Offshore Wind Project in the Irish Sea and the Morven Offshore Wind Project in the North Sea.

The project highlights the ongoing push for renewable energy infrastructure in the U.K., contributing to national efforts to secure more sustainable and low-carbon energy sources.
