The UK government has approved the 800 MW Springwell Solar Farm, marking it as the country’s largest solar project in terms of power generation.

The decision was announced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, with Michael Shanks, Energy Minister, highlighting the project as part of efforts to expand domestic clean energy production. The government stated that the project could generate enough electricity to power more than 180,000 homes annually.

According to officials, this approval represents the 25th nationally significant clean energy project cleared since July 2024, contributing to the government’s broader ambition to increase energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuel markets.

The government emphasized that solar power is among the most cost-effective forms of energy and plays a central role in its strategy to stabilize energy prices and support households and businesses.

The approval also aligns with recent policy measures, including expanded solar deployment initiatives and requirements for solar installations in new homes. The project is part of a wider push to accelerate renewable energy infrastructure amid global energy market volatility.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks said: “We are driving further and faster for clean homegrown power that we control to protect the British people and bring down bills for good.”

He added that reducing dependence on international fossil fuel markets is key to strengthening the UK’s energy independence.
