UK Green Hydrogen Projects Begin Construction to Drive Industrial Growth
The UK Government has launched construction on ten commercial-scale green hydrogen projects under its Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1), marking a significant step toward decarbonising industry and boosting regional economies.
Spanning regions such as South Wales, Bradford, North Scotland, and Teesside, the projects are expected to create over 700 skilled jobs and attract more than £400 million in private investment by 2026.
The initiative aligns with the government's Plan for Change, aiming to transition heavy industries away from fossil fuels and toward low-carbon alternatives like hydrogen.
A notable example includes the HyMarnham project in Newark, Nottinghamshire, which will repurpose a former coal-fired power station into a hydrogen hub. In North Scotland, the Cromarty Hydrogen Project will supply clean energy to local distilleries.
Additionally, Kimberly-Clark has announced a £125 million green hydrogen investment with partners HYRO, Carlton Power, and Schroders Greencoat, targeting its sites in Cumbria and Kent.
UK Minister for Industry Sarah Jones said the projects are "shovel-ready" and will "support Britain's industrial renewal by creating thousands of jobs."
The government has also earmarked £500 million for a national hydrogen transport and storage network and plans to consult on hydrogen blending to reduce costs and enhance energy affordability.
Clare Jackson, CEO of Hydrogen UK, stated the contracts reflect a "strong public-private commitment" to building a clean hydrogen economy.
