US Climate Law Turns One: Turbocharging Clean Energy Technology

24 Jul 2023

On the eve of its first anniversary on August 16, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a groundbreaking US climate law, is already proving to be a catalyst for a clean energy revolution. The legislation's 30% tax credit incentive has spurred an impressive surge in battery and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing across the country. Within a year, nearly 80 major clean energy manufacturing facilities have been announced, signaling a significant shift in the nation's approach to combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Experts and industry leaders are optimistic about the IRA's potential to reshape the landscape of renewable energy in the US. With plans to boost cleaner transportation and foster domestic supply chains, the law aims to make a substantial impact on reducing the country's reliance on fossil fuels. Solar panel installations have seen a significant uptick, with sales soaring for major manufacturers. Additionally, the IRA has accelerated the adoption of technologies like low-cost electrolyzers, hastening the implementation of hydrogen as clean energy on a scale previously unseen.

While the IRA has garnered bipartisan support for its potential to drive economic growth and job creation, it has also faced criticism and opposition. Some Republican lawmakers have proposed repealing key elements of the law, emphasizing the continued reliance on fossil fuels for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, with the promise of cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, the IRA's influence is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years, positioning the US as a formidable contender in the global clean energy sector.
