US Government Targets Aggressive Cost Reductions for Hydrogen Technologies

10 May 2024

The US government's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly reduce the costs associated with proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers and other hydrogen technologies. According to the latest Multi-Year Program Plan, the HFTO aims to drive down the cost of PEM electrolysers to a quarter of their current expense within the next two years.

Under the leadership of US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, the HFTO has set forth aggressive targets to achieve an uninstalled capital cost of $250/kW for PEM electrolysers by 2026. The office also aims to enhance efficiency levels and extend the lifespan of these systems to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions.

The adoption of these cost reduction measures is part of a broader effort to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen technologies in various sectors, including transportation and industry. By leveraging innovative manufacturing techniques and advancing research and development initiatives, the HFTO aims to establish the United States as a global leader in hydrogen innovation.
