ABB to Acquire UK-Based IPEC to Expand Electrical Monitoring Capabilities
ABB has agreed to acquire IPEC, a UK-based technology company specializing in early detection of electrical equipment failures, strengthening its capabilities in data center and industrial monitoring. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The acquisition expands ABB’s Electrification Service portfolio and targets industries where unplanned downtime can lead to significant financial and operational consequences, including data centers, utilities, healthcare, airports and manufacturing.
Founded more than 30 years ago, IPEC develops advanced electrical diagnostics and continuous monitoring systems that use AI-driven analytics to identify early signs of equipment failure. A key focus is the detection of partial discharge, a phenomenon linked to insulation degradation and cited as a leading cause of electrical asset failure.
By integrating IPEC’s monitoring technology, ABB aims to enhance its predictive maintenance offerings, which are designed to help customers move away from reactive repairs toward proactive asset management. According to ABB, this approach can significantly reduce downtime, lower maintenance costs, and extend the operational life of critical infrastructure.
Stuart Thompson, Division President of ABB Electrification Service, said the acquisition addresses the growing need for resilience across critical infrastructure, particularly as energy demand and operational pressures increase.
Colin Smith, CEO of IPEC, said the agreement brings the company’s diagnostic expertise to a broader global customer base, supporting earlier detection of electrical faults and improved infrastructure reliability.
The move reflects continued investment by ABB in digital monitoring and service-based solutions as industries seek to improve reliability, safety and efficiency in mission-critical electrical systems.
