NKT Supplies Reusable High-Voltage Cable System to Amprion
NKT has delivered what it says is the world's first reusable 400 kV temporary cable solution to German transmission system operator Amprion GmbH, marking a new approach to supporting high-voltage grid construction projects.
The modular, pluggable HVAC cable system is designed to maintain power transmission during the construction and reconfiguration of extra-high-voltage substations. Once a project is completed, the temporary installation can be disconnected, stored and redeployed on future projects, reducing material consumption and improving resource efficiency.
According to NKT, the solution was developed in collaboration with Amprion GmbH and is based on a technical specification jointly established by four German transmission system operators. The design aims to provide a scalable option for temporary cable installations while supporting ongoing grid expansion and modernisation efforts.
The deployment comes as European transmission operators continue investing in electricity infrastructure to accommodate growing demand, renewable energy integration and the broader energy transition.
