Vattenfall Selects Vestas Turbines for New Scottish Wind Project
Swedish energy group Vattenfall has chosen Vestas Wind Systems A/S to supply turbines for its 63-MW Clashindarroch II onshore wind farm near Huntly, Scotland. The project will use 14 Vestas V136 4.5 MW machines, with the contract covering supply, installation, and commissioning, alongside a 30-year service agreement.
In a first for both companies, parts of the turbine towers will be made using low-emission steel sourced from ArcelorMittal’s Belgian facility. This is expected to reduce the towers’ overall carbon footprint by 36%, aligning with Vattenfall’s target to cut emissions from supply chain goods and services by 50% by 2030.
The Clashindarroch II wind farm will be built adjacent to Vattenfall’s existing Clashindarroch site. Once operational, it is projected to generate enough electricity to meet the annual demand of approximately 61,500 homes. Preparatory works are already underway, with main construction scheduled to begin in spring 2026. The farm is expected to go online in the summer of 2027.
The project highlights the growing use of sustainable materials in renewable energy infrastructure and represents a significant step toward reducing emissions in the wind energy sector.
