Vestas Plans Nacelle Factory in Scotland to Boost Offshore Wind
Vestas Wind Systems has announced plans to build a new nacelle and hub factory in Scotland, UK to meet rising demand for offshore wind energy in the UK and Europe. The planned investment exceeds $289 million (€250 million) and could create up to 500 direct skilled jobs, while supporting additional employment across the wider supply chain.
The factory would produce nacelles and hubs for Vestas’ V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine, the company’s flagship model for large-scale offshore projects. Henrik Andersen, CEO of Vestas, emphasized that the investment would strengthen the UK’s clean energy supply chain and deliver long-term economic benefits to the region.
The project follows record-breaking results in the UK’s AR7 offshore wind auction and ongoing discussions with the UK Government and the Scottish Government. The final investment decision is contingent on securing sufficient UK-based orders in the AR7 and AR8 auctions. Subject to approvals and market conditions, production could start between 2029 and 2030.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband highlighted the project’s potential to support industrial jobs and advance UK energy security, while Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes pointed to Scotland’s attractiveness for renewable energy investment.
If realized, the Scotland factory would become Vestas’ fifth European facility dedicated to offshore wind nacelles and blades, reinforcing the company’s strategy of localizing production near key markets.
