Vietnamese Government Proposes Incentives for Rooftop Solar Power Systems

20 Jun 2023

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) in Vietnam has submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister, outlining incentives for the development of rooftop solar power systems for self-consumption. The proposal aims to encourage the installation of solar panels in residential, commercial, and corporate buildings, without the need to sell electricity to other entities.

Under the suggested mechanism, investors in rooftop solar power will be exempted from power operation licenses and electricity business registration certificates. Additionally, they will have access to various benefits, including tax exemptions or reductions, preferential interest rates on loans, and prioritization for budget allocation. The proposal emphasizes the importance of complying with safety and environmental regulations.

The incentives align with the recently approved Power Development Plan VIII, which aims to power half of the country's office buildings and homes with rooftop solar panels by 2030. However, these systems will not be connected to the national grid. The MoIT expects relevant ministries, local authorities, and financial institutions to support this initiative through simplified procedures and budget allocation.
