Viking Energy Wind Farm Injects £70 Million into Local Supply Chain

7 Aug 2023

The Viking Energy Wind Farm, led by SSE Renewables, has reached a significant milestone by infusing over £70 million into the local supply chain since its inception in 2020. More than 70 Shetland companies have benefited from the project, extending its positive impact beyond the region to the wider Scottish and UK supply network. The endeavor has created approximately 400 jobs during construction and contributes to Scotland's pursuit of net-zero emissions.

Neil Gray, Scotland's Cabinet Secretary for Wellbeing Economy, Fair Work, and Energy, commended the project's progress during a recent visit, noting, "The Viking wind farm project demonstrates not just the fantastic potential that Shetland's natural resources and skilled workforces have to capitalize on a fair and just energy transition - but that this potential is already becoming a reality." The local businesses involved, like Shetland's Bolts Car Hire, have experienced crucial support during challenging times, as emphasized by managing director John Garriock.

Heather Donald, SSE Renewables' Onshore Renewables Development and Construction Director, reaffirmed the commitment to local suppliers and job creation, stating, "Throughout the construction phase, we have been committed to maximizing opportunities for the local, Shetland, and wider Scottish supply chain which has helped create significant employment opportunities." As construction continues, the Viking Energy Wind Farm remains a key player in Shetland's transition to renewable energy, with plans to complete the 443MW capacity project by 2024, aligning with Scotland's broader sustainability goals.
