Villares Metals Revolutionizes Steel-Making with ABB’s Cutting-Edge Circuit Breaker Technology

4 Dec 2023

Villares Metals, a leading steel and special alloys producer based in Brazil, has elevated its steel-making capabilities through a groundbreaking collaboration with ABB Electrification. The innovative partnership marks a milestone for South America, as Villares Metals becomes the first in the region to leverage ABB's electric arc furnace (EAF)-specific VD4-AF circuit breaker technology.

The VD4-AF device, designed for extreme demands in EAFs, boasts 150,000 maintenance-free operations and efficiently handles furnace-fault currents up to 31.5 kA. This not only enhances output but also prioritizes safety, efficiency, and reliability. The switchgear solution, including ABB's UniGear ZS3.2 for arduous indoor applications, was installed at Villares Metals' Sumaré facility in a record time, minimizing disruption and downtime for the 'always-on' steelmaking operations.

Paulo Naletto, Steelworks and High Voltage Maintenance supervisor at Villares Metals, emphasized the decision to choose ABB's technology for operator safety and decreased ownership costs. The extended lifespan of the equipment reduces safety risks, increases operational safety, and aligns with Villares Metals' commitment to excellence in steel production.

The VD4-AF's asset optimization qualities lead to a reduced footprint and substantial cost savings, a significant departure from the previous need for frequent replacements and maintenance. This collaboration not only showcases technological advancement but also underscores the commitment of both Villares Metals and ABB to a sustainable and productive future in steel manufacturing.
