Virginia’s First Wind Farm to Power Google Data Centers

19 Feb 2026
Apex Clean Energy has begun construction on the Rocky Forge Wind Project, Virginia’s first land-based utility-scale wind farm. The facility, planned to produce between 75 and 79.3 MW, is designed to supply electricity exclusively to Google’s data centers, supporting the company’s carbon-free energy goals.

The wind farm, located along North Mountain in northern Botetourt County, will use GE turbines and connect to existing high-voltage transmission infrastructure. At full capacity, it could provide electricity to roughly 21,000 homes annually. Commercial operations are expected by late 2026.

Construction is projected to create up to 250 full-time equivalent jobs, with about seven long-term positions for operations. The project is also expected to generate $20–30 million in state and local tax revenue over its lifetime, benefiting landowners and local services.

The Rocky Forge Wind Project is part of Virginia’s Clean Economy Act, which mandates utilities transition to 100% carbon-free electricity between 2045 and 2050. The project follows the Permit by Rule process under the Virginia Administrative Code, allowing for environmental review and public participation.

Some residents have voiced concerns about future expansion. “If you got one up here, they’re going to come in here and put a lot of pressure to get exactly the same treatment,” said Bill Van Velzer, a local resident.

Despite these concerns, Apex Clean Energy anticipates the wind farm will be operational before the end of 2026, marking a milestone for renewable energy development in Virginia.
