Vulcan Energy Powers Up First Lithium Extraction Plant in Germany with Geothermal Energy

11 Apr 2024

Vulcan Energy, a leading lithium supplier, has initiated production of lithium chloride at its extraction plant in Germany, marking a pivotal moment in sustainable lithium production. Utilizing geothermal energy, the company aims to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide, a crucial component for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage systems.

"This locally produced resource signifies a significant milestone, with lithium sourced directly from Germany, extracted from the natural resources beneath our feet," stated Vulcan Energy Chief Executive Cris Moreno, highlighting the project's innovative approach.

Operating in Germany's Upper Rhine Valley region, Vulcan Energy has secured licenses for extensive land areas to extract lithium-rich brine from underground reservoirs. The process involves harnessing the region's super-hot brine to generate electricity and extract lithium, aligning with the European Union's targets for sustainable resource utilization.

The German government's recent establishment of a 1.1 billion-euro investment fund underscores the nation's commitment to securing critical raw materials essential for high-tech and green projects. Vulcan Energy's initiative aligns with these objectives, with offtake agreements already in place with major automakers, including Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault.

Looking ahead, Vulcan Energy aims to convert its lithium chloride output into battery-grade lithium hydroxide at a new conversion plant in Frankfurt later this year. Plans for a large-scale industrial plant with an expected annual output of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide are underway, signaling a significant contribution to the electric vehicle market and the green transition.

As Vulcan Energy progresses towards its ambitious goals, the company anticipates closing financing for its industrial plant within the next four to five months. With strong early results and support from stakeholders, Vulcan Energy's sustainable lithium production venture represents a significant step towards a greener, more sustainable future.
