Wärtsilä and EDF Renewables Add Two New Battery Projects in the UK

2 Jul 2025
Wärtsilä and EDF Renewables UK & Ireland have advanced their energy storage partnership with two new projects under construction, expanding their joint capacity to 404.5 MW / 709 MWh across eight sites in the UK.

The collaboration, aimed at supporting the UK's net-zero energy goals by 2030, recently saw the completion of the 50 MW / 100 MWh Sundon project in Bedfordshire and the 57 MW / 114 MWh Bramford project in Suffolk. Two additional projects--Bredbury (50 MW / 100 MWh) in Greater Manchester and Indian Queens (47.5 MW / 95 MWh) in Cornwall--are currently being built, with commissioning expected by the end of 2025 and early 2026, respectively.

All eight sites will be operated using Wärtsilä's GEMS software, which provides real-time optimisation, asset management, and market trading capabilities. The full portfolio is covered under long-term service agreements to ensure performance, uptime, and cost efficiency.

"Battery energy storage has a huge role to play in enabling the UK's clean energy transition," said Simone Sullivan, Head of Storage at EDF Renewables. "Our partnership with Wärtsilä helps us to optimise our grid-scale projects."

Chris Wolf, Sales Director at Wärtsilä Energy Storage, added: "Together with EDF Renewables, we are enhancing the reliability and flexibility of the UK's energy system."

The projects will provide essential grid services, including frequency response and electricity market participation, supporting the UK's shift to renewable power.
