Wind Power Surpasses Natural Gas as Britain’s Largest Electricity Source in Q1

12 May 2023

Wind Power Emerges as Britain's Primary Electricity Source in Q1

In a significant milestone, wind power became the leading source of electricity in Britain during the first quarter of 2023, surpassing natural gas and signaling the escalating importance of renewable energy in the nation's future. Imperial College London researchers reported that wind turbines generated 32.4% of the country's electricity in the initial three months of the year, overtaking natural gas at 31.7%.

The findings were unveiled ahead of the publication of Drax Electric Insights, an independent report compiled by a team at Imperial College. Drax, an energy firm, heralded this development as the first time wind power had claimed the largest share of the electricity mix in any quarter in the country's grid history.

The energy mix in the first quarter also included imports (12.6%), nuclear (12.5%), biomass (5.7%), solar (2.3%), hydro (1.5%), and coal (1.3%). Drax noted that wind-based electricity output witnessed a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2022, while gas declined by 5%. The analysis highlighted that wind turbines generated 24 terawatt hours of electricity, enough to charge over 300 million Tesla Model Ys, according to Wednesday's announcement.
