XGS Energy and CC Power Partner on 115 MW Geothermal Project to Boost Grid Stability in California
XGS Energy and California Community Power (CC Power) have signed an agreement to develop a 115 MW geothermal energy project in California, marking a step forward for next-generation geothermal deployment in the state.
The partnership is structured under a Geothermal Exploration, Offtake, and Development Engagement (GEODE) agreement, aimed at delivering reliable, round-the-clock renewable power to support California’s growing electricity demand.
The project will leverage XGS Energy’s water-independent geothermal technology, designed to access heat from dry rock formations without relying on natural water resources. This approach is expected to expand geothermal development potential while reducing environmental constraints.
CC Power, a joint powers authority representing multiple community choice aggregators, will work with XGS to secure clean energy supplies for more than 2.7 million customers across California.
Geothermal energy is seen as a key complement to intermittent renewables like solar and wind, offering consistent, baseload power generation. California is estimated to have more than 35 GW of untapped geothermal potential, although only a small portion is currently developed.
The agreement also reflects a broader push toward firm, low-carbon energy sources that can support grid reliability while advancing long-term climate targets.
The project forms part of XGS Energy’s expanding geothermal pipeline in the western United States, with additional developments already underway.
