Prysmian Group, a global frontrunner in energy and telecom cable systems, has achieved a significant milestone in their expansion journey. The TSO Amprion, a paramount European Transmission System Operator, has chosen Prysmian Group as the preferred bidder for three major power projects—Offshore Grid Connection Systems BalWin1 and BalWin2, as well as the underground cable project DC34. The collective value of these contracts is approximately 4.5 billion Euros.
These strategic projects form an integral part of Germany's ambitious vision to establish 70 GW of offshore wind energy by 2045. The primary purpose is to facilitate the transfer of energy from the North Sea's offshore wind farms to consumers in the Western and Southern parts of Germany.
"Securing Prysmian as the preferred bidder has brought us significantly closer to realizing the objectives of these pivotal projects on schedule. As a result, we've ensured the primary components for our offshore endeavors until 2030," said Hendrik Neumann, CTO of Amprion.
BalWin1 and BalWin2 are set to each transmit a staggering 2 GW of energy from the forthcoming offshore wind farms situated in the German North Sea BalWin Cluster. These energy superhighways will link the grid connection points in Wehrendorf (Lower Saxony) and Westerkappeln (North Rhine-Westphalia), bolstering the energy transition in Germany's industrial core.
Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects BU at Prysmian Group, voiced his enthusiasm, stating, "Our unwavering dedication to fostering greener and smarter power grids is in full alignment with Amprion's significant energy transition targets."
A brief insight into the technical aspects:
- BalWin1: It will deploy approximately 1,070 km of cables spanning a 358 km route.
- BalWin2: This project will involve around 1,100 km of cables, traversing a 376 km path.
- DC34: Constituting the Federal Requirement Plan Act's Number 82, DC34 aims to bridge the substation in the regions of Ovelgönne/Rastede/Wiefelstede/Westerstede (Lower Saxony) to another in Bürstadt (Hesse). It will transmit up to 2 GW of energy sourced from the North Sea's offshore wind farms to the residents of the Rhine-Main metropolitan area, using up to 2,100 km of cables.
Prysmian's commitment to these projects is evident from their promise to reserve the necessary production and installation capacity until 15 January 2024. Both parties are mutually committed to finalizing the contracts by this date.
This partnership marks a considerable step forward in Germany's roadmap to sustainable and reliable energy solutions for the future.
