U.S. Energy Storage to Surpass 600 GWh by 2030, According to Benchmark/SEIA Report

4 Mar 2026
The U.S. battery energy storage market is experiencing rapid growth, with Benchmark Mineral Intelligence projecting more than 600 GWh of installed capacity by 2030, according to a report prepared for the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).

In 2025, U.S. energy storage deployments rose 29% to over 28 GW / 57 GWh, driven primarily by 16 GW / 50 GWh of utility-scale installations. Behind-the-meter projects—including residential, commercial, and industrial systems—accounted for 12 GW / 8 GWh.

Looking ahead, Benchmark forecasts 35 GW / 70 GWh of deployments in 2026, with utility-scale projects contributing 20.2 GW / 62.4 GWh and behind-the-meter systems adding 14.8 GW / 7.3 GWh.

At the end of 2025, the U.S. had 137 GWh of utility-scale storage, 19 GWh commercial and industrial, and 9 GWh residential. While residential growth surged 51% in 2025 ahead of the Section 25D tax credit expiration, analysts expect that segment to slow in 2026.

Texas overtook California as the leading annual utility-scale market by gigawatts deployed, though California remains the cumulative leader with 59.8 GWh installed. Other notable states include Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.

Policy and trade factors, including tariffs and regulatory uncertainty, have increased system costs, but deployment continues to grow. Analysts note energy storage is increasingly critical for grid reliability, renewable integration, and data center power needs, highlighting its role as a key infrastructure element for the evolving U.S. power grid.
