Haesong Advances 1 GW Offshore Wind Development with Siemens Gamesa
Haesong Offshore Wind has signed a capacity reservation agreement with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy for its offshore wind development in South Korea.
The agreement covers turbine supply for the Haesong Offshore Wind 1 and 3 projects, located off the coast of Shinan County in Jeonnam Province, with a combined planned capacity of approximately 1 GW.
The projects are being developed by Haesong Offshore Wind, which is backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The developments form part of South Korea’s broader offshore wind expansion strategy aimed at increasing renewable energy generation capacity over the coming decade.
The turbine reservation agreement is expected to support project planning and supply chain coordination as developers move toward final investment decisions and construction preparation.
The Haesong projects have already secured a grid interconnection agreement with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), allowing the future wind farms to connect to the national transmission network.
The projects are also linked to broader localisation efforts within South Korea’s offshore wind supply chain. Earlier agreements associated with the development included partnerships involving domestic manufacturers and contractors for turbine assembly, cable installation, and foundation supply.
South Korea has been accelerating offshore wind deployment in recent years as part of national decarbonisation goals and efforts to expand domestic renewable energy production. Industry forecasts indicate that the country is expected to become one of Asia’s largest offshore wind markets during the 2030s.
The agreement also reflects increasing competition among turbine manufacturers seeking to secure positions in Asia-Pacific offshore wind markets, where project pipelines continue to grow alongside investment in transmission infrastructure and local manufacturing capacity.
