Queensland Hydrogen Hub Advances with Lion Energy’s $10 Million Deal

26 Aug 2024

Lion Energy, based in Western Australia, has signed a $10 million joint development agreement with DGA Energy Solutions Australia, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi, and Samsung C&T Corporation to build a renewable hydrogen hub at the Port of Brisbane. The project will focus on green hydrogen production and refuelling for heavy mobility fleets, such as public bus and truck fleets, as well as industrial use in the construction and mining sectors.

The hydrogen facility will include two 1 MW alkaline electrolyser systems, capable of producing 850 kg of green hydrogen per day, with a total annual output exceeding 300 tonnes. Tom Soulsby, Lion Energy's executive chair, highlighted that the project showcases the growing potential of green hydrogen in Australia, while enhancing Lion Energy's position in the sector.

The joint partners will initially contribute $3.7 million for pre-construction costs, with additional debt financing of $6.3 million to follow once construction begins. Lion will retain 50% ownership of the project, while DGA Energy Solutions Australia and Samsung C&T Corporation will hold 25% each.

The hydrogen hub is part of Lion's broader strategy to displace grey hydrogen with green alternatives in Australia's heavy mobility and industrial sectors. With key government approvals and long-term leases already secured, construction is expected to proceed rapidly, setting the foundation for similar projects across eastern Australia.
