RWE to Build 400 MW/1,100 MWh Battery at Moerdijk
RWE will build a 400 MW/1,100 MWh battery energy storage system at its Moerdijk power station in the Netherlands, with commissioning planned for Q2 2028.
The 208-container lithium-ion system will connect to the national grid through RWE’s existing substation and provide nearly three hours of full-power output. Under capacity steering agreements with transmission system operator TenneT, it will be dispatched to relieve grid congestion in Noord-Brabant.
“RWE’s large-scale battery is located close to the 150,000-volt high-voltage substation at Moerdijk-Noord, where it will help to alleviate the regional bottleneck,” said Mark Lentjes, Regional Director of TenneT Southern Netherlands.
The battery will also provide grid services, including instantaneous reserve, and support RWE and TotalEnergies’ 795 MW OranjeWind offshore wind project by storing surplus generation and supplying power when needed. Construction is scheduled to begin ahead of the planned 2028 commissioning.
