Fervo Energy Brings First 33-MW GeoBlock Online in Utah
Fervo Energy has achieved first power at its Cape Station project in Beaver County, Utah, which the company says is the first utility-scale enhanced geothermal system (EGS) to generate electricity. The first 33-MW generating unit is now producing power, with commercial operation expected by 1 October 2026.
Cape Station Phase I comprises approximately 100 MW across three 33-MW “GeoBlocks.” Fervo expects the remaining two units to enter commercial operation by 1 January 2027. Phase II is planned to add 400 MW by 2028, while the full project is expected to reach 900 MW of contracted generation capacity, enough to supply nearly 1 million US homes annually.
The EGS project uses horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to create subsurface heat exchangers. Water circulated through hot rock generates electricity through the Organic Rankine cycle.
“First power is proof the science works,” Jack Norbeck, Fervo’s chief technology officer and co-founder, said.
