Hitachi Energy Powers Fast Grid Response at 850 MW Waratah Battery
Hitachi Energy has completed commissioning of its digital control systems for the 850 MW/1,680 MWh Waratah Super Battery, which has entered full commercial operation in New South Wales, Australia.
Built, owned and operated by Akaysha Energy, the battery is integrated with Transgrid’s System Integrity Protection Scheme (SIPS), enabling it to detect grid disturbances and respond within milliseconds to support system reliability.
Hitachi Energy supplied, installed and commissioned 288 power conversion systems (PCS) and two power plant controllers (PPC) that coordinate the battery’s real-time response.
“It demonstrates how large-scale battery storage can operate as a strategic grid asset, providing fast-acting support to the grid during critical moments to maintain reliability,” said Bernard Norton, Hitachi Energy Australia Managing Director.
Under a 20-year service agreement, Hitachi Energy will also provide real-time monitoring, diagnostics and analytics through HMAX Energy to support proactive maintenance, system performance and optimized dispatch.
