Wärtsilä to Deliver 70 MWh Battery Storage System in Aruba
Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with Water-en Energiebedrijf Aruba (WEB Aruba) to install a 35 MW / 70 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to strengthen grid reliability and support renewable integration.
The contract covers engineering, procurement, construction, an energy management system (EMS) and long-term maintenance. Booked in Q3 2026, the project is scheduled for handover in Q2 2028.
The EMS will coordinate battery storage with existing wind, solar and engine power plants, using forecasting and grid controls to optimize dispatch. Software updates and technical support will follow an as-a-service model.
“With our solution, we will support WEB Aruba to improve the quality and reliability of providing power to the island as well as to reduce the cost of delivering it,” said Risto Paldanius, Vice President, Americas at Wärtsilä Energy.
The installation is Wärtsilä's largest Caribbean storage project to date, highlighting the role of grid-scale battery storage and inverter-based grid stability in renewable integration.
