Ignitis and emsys VPP Expand Battery Balancing in Lithuania
Ignitis and Germany’s emsys VPP are expanding their virtual power plant (VPP) partnership to integrate battery storage into Lithuania’s balancing market, supporting frequency regulation and grid stability.
The upgraded platform will enable battery energy storage systems (BESS) to provide automatic and manual frequency restoration reserves (aFRR and mFRR), subject to prequalification and connection to transmission operator Litgrid’s control system.
Established in 2024, the partnership initially supported direct marketing of Ignitis’ approximately 650 MW renewable portfolio, including wind and solar forecasting. Batteries already participate in intraday trading.
“Battery storage systems, in particular, can respond very quickly to changes in the grid and therefore play a key role in increasing the flexibility of the power system,” said Eike Arndt, Managing Director of emsys VPP.
The expansion follows the Baltic states’ February 2025 synchronization with continental Europe. The platform may later incorporate additional wind and solar assets, extending virtual power plant integration and distributed grid control.
