Ørsted and Nuveen Open 913 MW Offshore Wind Farm
Ørsted and Nuveen have inaugurated Borkum Riffgrund 3, a 913 MW offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. Located about 72 kilometres offshore, the project is jointly owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure and is Ørsted’s largest offshore wind farm in Germany.
The project is expected to generate enough electricity annually to supply the equivalent of nearly one million German households. It connects to TenneT’s DolWin epsilon offshore converter platform, which Ørsted describes as a first for an offshore wind project in Germany.
Construction involved components and installation services from suppliers across Europe, with around 100 German companies participating in the project’s development and construction.
Ørsted CEO Rasmus Errboe said Borkum Riffgrund 3 demonstrates the potential of large-scale offshore wind to supply renewable electricity to German households and industry.
Nuveen Infrastructure’s Jordi Francesch said the project highlights the investment and cooperation required to expand Germany’s renewable energy infrastructure.
