Recurrent Energy Sells 200MW/800MWh BESS in France to BW ESS
Recurrent Energy, a Canadian Solar subsidiary, announced the sale of two standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in France, totalling 200 MW / 800 MWh, to global owner-operator BW ESS. The deal is the companies’ first transaction and BW ESS’ entry into the French market. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Baixas (Pyrénées-Orientales) and Coquainvilliers (Calvados) each offer 100 MW / 400 MWh of large-scale storage. Recurrent Energy, which originated them, says both hold advanced transmission-level grid connection positions with very limited expected network constraints.
After Recurrent Energy completes development, BW ESS will build, own and operate the assets. Analysts called for more storage after the 2025 Iberian Peninsula blackout.
Erik Strømsø, CEO and Co-Founder of BW ESS, said batteries can complement France’s “nuclear backbone by adding the rapid-response flexibility needed to balance the system.” Dylan Marx, CEO of Recurrent Energy, said the projects “will provide flexible storage capacity to support grid stability.”
