Iberdrola Expands Solar Community Network in Portugal with Eight New Projects
Iberdrola is developing eight new solar community projects in Portugal, expanding access to shared renewable electricity for more than 2,000 users.
The new developments will bring the company's total number of solar community projects in Portugal to 10, including two that are already operational. According to Iberdrola, the installations are expected to generate approximately 1.7 million kWh of renewable electricity annually and help avoid more than 250,000 kilograms of CO₂ emissions each year.
The programme allows households and businesses located within a four-kilometre radius of participating solar installations to access locally generated renewable electricity without installing their own solar panels or making upfront investments.
Commenting on the initiative, Pedro Torres, Director of Smart Solutions at Iberdrola Clientes Portugal, said: "Solar communities are transforming the way energy reaches people, making it more accessible and collaborative."
The expansion forms part of Iberdrola’s broader renewable energy portfolio in Portugal, where the company operates hydroelectric and solar generation assets. The company said the programme is designed to support decentralised energy generation by bringing electricity production closer to local consumers.
