ABB’s Innovative Power Automation for Valentine Gold Project in Canada

10 Oct 2023

In a significant development for the world of mining, ABB has been awarded a contract to provide an integrated process and power automation system for the Valentine Gold Project in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. This project, backed by Marathon Gold, represents a critical step forward in the Canadian gold mining industry.

Under this contract, ABB will take on the design, supply, and commissioning of the process and power control systems, with a focus on integrating them under the ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system (DCS). This unified approach will empower mine operators with enhanced visibility across operations, ultimately leading to optimized productivity.

The integration of process and power control systems within a common framework not only streamlines operations but also opens doors to improving safety, plant efficiency, and profitability across the entire mining value chain. ABB's automation system will be built upon its Select I/O and Industrial Ethernet networks, further ensuring efficiency and reliability.

Sachin Jari, Head of ABB Process Industries North America mining division, expressed confidence in the project's success, stating, "It is set to become a very important gold mining operation in Canada and one that our experienced project team will make a positive impact on. They have decades of experience working with mining projects of similar stature in Canada and globally."

The Valentine Gold Project, known as the largest undeveloped gold resource in the Atlantic Canada region, is already in the construction phase. Projections indicate an average annual production of 195,000 ounces of gold for the first 12 years of operation. With a planned operational lifespan of 14 years, the mine is on track to commence gold production in the first quarter of 2025.

This contract marks a significant stride toward modernizing and optimizing gold mining operations in Canada, ultimately contributing to the nation's gold production capabilities and economic growth. As ABB's integrated power automation system takes center stage at the Valentine Gold Project, the future of gold mining in Canada looks brighter than ever.
