Ørsted Completes Construction of 300 MW Iceni BESS
Ørsted has completed construction of its 300 MW/600 MWh Iceni battery energy storage system (BESS) in Norfolk, England. The facility, near Norwich, is now undergoing final installation and commissioning work.
Located alongside the Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm onshore converter station, Iceni comprises 170 Tesla Megapacks.
Developed with Hitachi Energy, Knights Brown and Tesla, the project features a split-site layout connected by 18 33 kV cables, each exceeding 600 meters. Its shared grid connection with Hornsea 3 adds technical complexity.
Cable installation and termination continue, while initial testing and preparations for BESS transformer energization are underway.
Beatrice d’Eufemia, Ørsted's Iceni Project Manager, said the facility will store excess renewable electricity for use during higher demand, supporting grid balancing.
Once operational, Iceni will be among Europe's largest battery storage facilities, with capacity equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of approximately 80,000 UK homes.
