Slovenia’s Largest Solar Plant Enters Trial Operation
Slovenia’s largest solar power plant, the 9.8-MW Prapretno project near Trbovlje, has entered trial operation. Developed by state-owned utility HSE, the $12.3 million (€10.8 million) facility comprises three units and 17,946 solar modules, with expected annual generation of about 10.2 GWh.
The project includes a 7-MW, 14-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) designed to increase generation flexibility and support Slovenia’s electricity grid. HSE said initial testing showed the battery operating reliably, with some technical parameters exceeding planned levels.
Prapretno is connected to a transformer substation commissioned in 2022 and designed to accommodate the plant’s planned expansion. Once remaining procedures and the operating permit are completed, the facility will be remotely controlled from HSE’s control centre.
Built on former waste-disposal land associated with the Trbovlje coal-fired power plant, the project received $3.4 million (€3 million) from the EU Just Transition Fund as part of the region’s transition from coal to renewable energy.
