Iberdrola and Microsoft Sign First European PPAs and Expand AI Partnership
Iberdrola and Microsoft have strengthened their partnership with the signing of two long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Spain and expanded collaboration on artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. This marks the first European PPAs between the companies.
The agreements cover 150 MW of renewable electricity from the Iglesias wind farm in Burgos and the El Escudo wind farm in Cantabria, supplementing three existing PPAs in the United States, totaling around 500 MW. The contracts support Microsoft’s target of operating with 100% renewable energy in Europe and align with global sustainability commitments.
As part of the partnership, Iberdrola will continue leveraging Microsoft Azure cloud services, Microsoft Copilot, and security and regulatory compliance solutions to accelerate AI deployment across its operations. The companies will also explore initiatives including renewable energy supply, data centre waste heat reuse, electrified land, carbon credits, hydrogen, battery storage, and other technological innovations across Europe, the US, Brazil, and Australia.
Samer Abu-Ltaif, President of Microsoft for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said the partnership “combines Iberdrola's leadership in renewable energy with Microsoft’s cloud and AI technologies, advancing sustainability goals and driving innovation at scale.”
Aitor Moso, Director of Global Customer Business at Iberdrola, highlighted that the collaboration “will accelerate the adoption of AI across the Iberdrola Group and expand our renewable PPA portfolio, reflecting a strong commitment to decarbonisation and digital transformation.”
