Thor Wind Farm Delivers First Power to Denmark’s Grid

Denmark’s largest offshore wind project has reached a key milestone as the Thor Offshore Wind Farm begins supplying electricity to the national grid. The project, led by RWE in partnership with Norges Bank Investment Management, is located in the North Sea off the west coast of Jutland.

The 1.1GW facility delivered its first power shortly after the installation of its initial turbine, marking an early step toward full commissioning. Grid operations are managed by Energinet, while Danske Commodities provides route-to-market services.

Once fully operational in 2027, the wind farm is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power more than one million Danish households. The project includes 72 turbines manufactured by Siemens Gamesa, some of which will feature recyclable rotor blades and lower-carbon steel towers.

Key construction milestones have already been achieved, including the installation of an offshore substation by HSM Offshore Energy and the completion of turbine foundations and an onshore substation by Siemens Energy. The project has also secured a 30-year electricity production licence from the Danish Energy Agency.

Kim Willerslev Jakobsen, CEO of Energinet Systemansvar, highlighted the significance of the milestone, noting the project’s role in advancing Denmark’s green energy transition. Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, emphasized the project’s steady progress and collaboration among partners.

In addition to its environmental impact, the project is expected to create 50–60 local jobs at a new service facility in Thorsminde Port.
