LS Cable & System Advances World’s Largest Subsea Cable Facility

LS Cable & System is accelerating the construction of a subsea cable production plant in Chesapeake, Virginia, expanding its global manufacturing footprint for high-voltage transmission infrastructure.

Its US subsidiary, LS GreenLink, has begun construction of a 201-meter Vertical Continuous Vulcanization (VCV) tower, the core structure of the facility. The tower enables vertical cable production, a method designed to improve insulation consistency, structural stability, and output quality in subsea cable manufacturing.

Once completed, the facility is expected to house one of the largest VCV installations globally and become the tallest structure in Virginia.

LS Cable & System said the plant is targeted for completion in the second half of next year, with commercial production scheduled for 2028. The site is designed to support rising demand for subsea and ultra-high-voltage transmission systems, driven by grid reinforcement projects and expanding AI data centre infrastructure across the United States.

Beyond the US market, the company said the facility will serve as a strategic export base for Europe, positioning Chesapeake as a transatlantic production hub for next-generation power transmission systems.

Rather than simply adding capacity, the project marks a structural shift in how LS Cable localises production closer to demand centres while reshaping its role in the global subsea cable supply chain.
