Nexans Finalizes Record-Depth Subsea Power Cable Installation

The expansion of a 420 kV subsea power link across the Fensfjord in Western Norway has been completed by Nexans and Statnett. The project strengthens the regional transmission grid serving areas around Bergen and nearby industrial zones.

The new connection doubles electricity transmission capacity between Haugsvær and Lindås, improving long-term grid reliability in a region with rising power demand from households and industry.

According to the project update, installation works were completed in 2025, with final energization and certification marking contractual completion in 2026.

The project included the engineering, manufacturing, and installation of two 420 kV HVAC subsea cables incorporating fiber-optic elements for monitoring and communications. The route spans approximately 7.8 kilometers across the fjord and reaches depths of up to 530 metres.

This depth represents a technical milestone for HVAC subsea cable installation, requiring specialized anchoring and seabed stabilization to ensure long-term performance.

Marine operations were carried out using the cable-laying vessel Nexans Skagerrak, supported by additional workboats and onshore installation teams.

Peter Drakele, Senior Project Manager at Nexans, said: “This project required precision engineering and installation at extreme depth and in demanding fjord terrain. Reaching 530 meters with 420 kV HVAC technology represents a significant technical achievement.”

Lars Eriksen, CEO of Nexans Norway, stated: “Strengthening grid capacity in Western Norway is vital for both communities and industry, and we are proud to contribute to Norway’s long-term energy security.”

The project is part of broader efforts to reinforce transmission infrastructure across Western Norway and prepare the grid for future demand growth.
