SPS Advances $3.6bn Texas-New Mexico Transmission Project
Xcel Energy subsidiary SPS is advancing a $3.6 billion transmission project connecting the Texas Panhandle with southeastern New Mexico to support rising electricity demand and improve grid reliability.
The Texas segment, known as “Tecovas to State Line”, will span about 180 miles and include a major high-voltage substation near Bushland. It is estimated to cost up to $1 billion.
SPS is currently identifying a route, securing land easements and working with local landowners to minimise disruption. Jared Cooley, Regional Vice President of Integrated System Planning, said: “This is the largest transmission project SPS has undertaken. In order to successfully build this project, we will need to collaborate with landowners in our communities.”
Construction is expected to take about two years, with the project targeting an in-service date of May 2031. Costs are expected to be recovered through customer electricity bills, subject to approval by utility commissions in Texas and New Mexico.
