Hitachi Energy Completes Transition of South Boston ABB Plant with Installation of New Signs

23 Jun 2023

Hitachi Energy is making significant progress in the transition of the former South Boston ABB plant into its hands, with the installation of new signs underway.

In a celebratory event, hundreds of current and retired Hitachi employees, as well as community partners, gathered to place their signatures on the back of the new 45-foot Hitachi sign that will adorn the Power Transformers building. Ryland Clark, Hitachi's Community Relations and Engagement manager, emphasized that this rebranding effort aims to solidify Hitachi's connection with the community while improving the facility's appearance and demonstrating their commitment to the area.

The South Boston plant, originally established by Westinghouse Electric Corp. on a tobacco farm in 1967, became part of ABB through an acquisition in 1989. In 2020, ABB formed a joint venture with Hitachi, leading to the creation of Hitachi ABB Power Grids, which subsequently transformed into Hitachi Energy, a subsidiary of Hitachi. The installation of the new signs marks the completion of the site's transformation from ABB to Hitachi, signifying a new chapter for the company. The signing event not only serves promotional purposes but also provides an opportunity for Hitachi to express gratitude to its employees and the community for their continuous support. The installation of the five new signs is expected to be completed by Sunday, with an additional LED board scheduled to be installed in July, which will showcase the faces of employees and community partners who have contributed to the company's success over the years. Passersby on U.S. 58 can already catch a glimpse of the impressive 45-foot Hitachi sign proudly displayed on top of the Power Transformers building, representing the ongoing transformation of the South Boston plant.
