UK Wind Power Hits Record High, Increasing Grid Demand
The United Kingdom recorded record wind power generation in 2025, with wind producing more than 85 TWh, or almost 30% of Great Britain’s electricity. Offshore wind accounted for 52 TWh, representing 17.7% of the UK electricity mix.
Wind generation increased a further 31% year on year in the first quarter of 2026, contributing to a 16% rise in overall clean power output, according to London Stock Exchange data.
RenewableUK CEO Tara Singh said: “We secured a record-breaking amount of offshore wind in the last round, which will bring over US$40.5 billion (£30 billion) in private investment to the U.K., and it’s essential that we continue to procure good value renewables.”
The UK has more than 50 GW of onshore wind projects in its development pipeline, while the Crown Estate identifies 93 GW of fixed and floating offshore wind capacity in planning or with future potential. The expansion is expected to increase requirements for grid infrastructure, transmission capacity and system flexibility.
