Fluence Wins 1 GWh Battery Contract in Germany
Vattenfall has selected Fluence Energy to build a 254 MW/1 GWh battery storage facility in Brunsbüttel, Germany. The project, Vattenfall’s largest battery storage development to date, is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2028 and will support grid flexibility and renewable energy integration.
The facility will be built at Vattenfall’s decommissioning Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant site and connected to 50Hertz’s 380 kV transmission network.
Fluence will oversee engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and long-term maintenance. The four-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) will use its Gridstack Pro 5000 platform.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027. The facility will nearly double Vattenfall’s existing battery storage capacity.
The project also highlights developments in grid-forming and grid-following inverter technologies and transmission grid capacity.
The agreement expands the companies’ partnership to eight battery storage projects across three European countries.
