SSEN Proposes Three Grid Projects in Scotland
SSEN Transmission has submitted proposals to UK energy regulator Ofgem seeking eligibility approval for three electricity transmission projects in Perthshire and the Scottish Highlands.
Announced on October 13, 2026, the projects include the Coupar Angus 2 132-kV substation, supporting 171.6 MW of contracted generation and storage capacity.
The Earba pumped storage hydro connection would support 600 MW initially, expanding to 1,800 MW in Stage 2. The proposed Coire Mashie 400-kV substation would connect the 1,800 MW scheme.
SSEN estimates the projects could support more than 400 jobs across Scotland.
The company seeks eligibility under Ofgem’s T3 Load Re-opener process, agreement on the regulatory assessment route and pre-construction funding for design, environmental assessments, land, planning and stakeholder engagement.
Approval would allow further development ahead of future funding decisions, supporting additional renewable generation and energy storage connections through transmission grid capacity expansion and electricity infrastructure investment.
