$24.7B Caspian-Europe HVDC Corridor Planned
AZERBAIJAN – The Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor requires an estimated $24.7 billion (€22.1 billion) in investment, including $16 billion (€14.3 billion) for HVDC transmission infrastructure.
According to Green Energy Corridor Power Company (GECO), the approved feasibility study outlines a 3.9 GW transmission system connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary.
The project comprises three 1.3 GW, ±525 kV HVDC links, each featuring approximately 1,124 km of subsea cable across the Black Sea at depths reaching 2,200 meters, presenting significant deepwater cable installation requirements.
The first link is scheduled for 2032, followed by additional connections in 2036 and 2040. Annual renewable electricity exports to Europe are projected to reach 20 TWh by 2040.
Another $8.7 billion (€7.8 billion) is allocated to renewable generation.
GECO is seeking investors and partners to advance the proposed cross-border electricity interconnection, with a final investment decision targeted for 2029.
