Giga Storage advances 1.4 GWh BESS project in Germany
Giga Storage has brought its 350 MW/1,400 MWh Albatross battery energy storage project in Germany to ready-to-build status, with construction planned for 2027 and a connection to Amprion’s 380 kV transmission network.
Located near Neuenkirchen in Lower Saxony, the seven-hectare site will connect through Amprion’s Merzen substation. The installation will comprise 264 battery units, 96 medium-voltage transformers and two high-voltage transformers.
Developed with Isenau Projects, Albatross is expected to reach a final investment decision in Q4 2026, with construction beginning in the first half of 2027 and commissioning in 2028.
The project is designed to support grid stability and frequency regulation near Germany’s North Sea coast, which hosts approximately 9.2 GW of offshore wind capacity.
Giga Storage estimates the facility could supply electricity equivalent to the daily consumption of 193,000 households.
The project forms part of the developer’s expanding German energy storage portfolio.
