Vattenfall plans 110 MW system for Dutch grid congestion

Vattenfall is developing a 110 MW hybrid energy installation in Almere for TenneT to manage grid congestion across Flevoland, Gelderland and Utrecht in the Netherlands.

The system combines a 50 MW battery capable of supplying electricity for four hours with a 60 MW natural gas turbine. During grid congestion, the battery will operate first. If congestion persists beyond its discharge period, the turbine will provide additional power.

The installation is planned for Vattenfall’s existing Markerkant district heating site, which has gas and high-voltage grid connections.

Subject to permits, the temporary facility is expected to operate from 2029 through 2033.

The project involves Flevoland province, Almere municipality and regional operators Liander and Stedin.

The regional grid reached capacity limits earlier in 2026. The installation aims to maintain grid stability, manage peak loads and prevent further connection restrictions.

Vattenfall will purchase green gas certificates for the turbine.
