Google and Voltus Expand PJM Virtual Power Plant by 1,070 MW
USA—Google and Voltus have expanded their agreement to develop a gigawatt-scale virtual power plant (VPP) in the PJM Interconnection region, adding 1,070 MW of flexible capacity to an initial 100 MW commitment announced in June 2026.
Under the Google-funded Bring Your Own Capacity programme, Voltus will aggregate distributed energy resources (DERs) from homes and businesses, including batteries, smart thermostats and adjustable industrial loads.
During periods of grid stress, participating customers can reduce or shift electricity consumption in exchange for bill savings or direct payments.
Ellen Zuckerman, Google's Head of Energy Market Development for North and South America, said: “Distributed energy resources are powerful tools for managing a modern, reliable grid while keeping energy affordable.”
The agreement aims to support grid reliability and accommodate growing electricity demand across PJM, which serves approximately 67 million customers in 13 states and Washington, D.C.
