Balfour Beatty Wins National Grid 400 kV Substation Contract
UK—Balfour Beatty has secured a contract from National Grid for the first phase of the Birkhill Wood 400 kV substation in East Yorkshire, England.
Awarded through National Grid’s £8 billion Electricity Transmission Partnership, the contract covers detailed design and enabling works ahead of construction in 2027.
The planned gas-insulated substation (GIS) will strengthen the UK’s transmission network and connect three North Sea offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 4.22 GW, enough to supply approximately four million homes.
Tony Wilson, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution business, said: “Upgrading the UK's electricity network is essential to connecting more renewable energy and meeting future demand for secure, low-carbon power.”
Enabling works are underway, with commissioning planned for 2030. The project is expected to employ approximately 200 people at peak construction.
