HELLENiQ ENERGY Completes 100 MW BESS in Greece
HELLENiQ Renewables, a subsidiary of HELLENiQ ENERGY, has completed a 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Thessaloniki, Greece, connected to the transmission grid through a new 33/150 kV step-up substation and a 5-km underground high-voltage line.
The approximately $56 million (€50 million) project comprises three storage stations using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with liquid cooling, covering approximately 100,000 square metres at the Thessaloniki Industrial Facilities.
Selected through Greece’s first competitive energy storage tender, the operational facility provides grid balancing services and supports renewable energy integration.
“Batteries provide the flexibility required to integrate more renewables, reduce green energy curtailments and contribute to a more reliable, secure and cost-efficient energy system,” said Sotiris Kapellos, CEO of HELLENiQ Renewables.
The company is also constructing a 50 MW/200 MWh storage facility in Florina, while targeting 1.5 GW of operational renewable capacity by 2028.
