METLEN, Karatzis Inaugurate 330 MW BESS in Greece
METLEN and Karatzis Group inaugurated Greece’s largest standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Larissa, Thessaly, on October 14, 2026.
The facility has a power capacity of 330 MW and an energy storage capacity of 790 MWh, making it the largest standalone BESS in Eastern Europe, according to METLEN.
The project was developed through a joint investment vehicle, with Karatzis Group holding 51% and METLEN 49%. METLEN undertook construction and is responsible for operation and maintenance.
The facility is designed to improve grid flexibility, support renewable energy integration and strengthen electricity supply reliability.
Evangelos Mytilineos, METLEN’s Executive Chairman, said: “storage, alongside grids and interconnections, is essential if we are to use the clean energy we generate with efficiency and provide businesses and consumers with a more reliable and predictable energy supply.”
The project received loan support from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.
